Media receive a total of 114 objections

Professionals for Ethics says that a growing number of families who refuse to receive the new subject
Maria Plasencia SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE According to the group Professionals for Ethics, only in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have objected to a total of 114 families to the new subject Education for Citizenship, which will begin teaching in the archipelago in the second of next year and ESO in sixth grade during the academic year 2009/10, as set out the timetable for implementation of the Organic Law of Education (LOE)
Although not yet aware of the objections received in the Ministry of Education, sources of professional association for Ethics suggests that "could be presented in brief" and allude to a total of 114 Tenerife province alone, 63 in La Palma and 51 in Tenerife. In this situation, the director general for Planning and Educational Innovation, Guillermo Melian, says that "since at the moment have not been submitted, we do not have problems in that regard."
However, if the Islands are still the same dynamics in other regions where it already has started the course, could reach the courts, to the social debate raised nationally about not only the obligatory the new matter but also the right of parents to object, or area in which regional governments, neither the State nor the Court itself have been, so far, okay. Objections of conscience
matter, driven mostly by the group Professionals for Ethics, take refuge in the alleged unconstitutionality of the course curriculum.
Most parents who refuse to have their children understand Citizenship Education is an intrusion on their freedom to educate children in their own religious and moral convictions, recognized in the English Constitution. Since
Citizenship Education will be taught compulsorily in the Canaries next year as imposed by the LOE, the Canary Islands Government has issued warrants, setting the curriculum of the subject, which, according Melian, "is has complied with the minimum set by the Ministry of Education and has completed the schedule with content related to the reality of the Archipelago ".
Immigration in the Canary curriculum
conflict resolution, coexistence, democracy and the struggle for happiness are some of units that make up the curriculum for Citizenship Education, concepts with which students begin to familiarize canaries from the beginning of next school year, when the subject begins teaching in the Islands.
Since the adoption of the LOE in Government until now, much has been written and discussed about the subject, while undoubtedly become Focus of the next school year in the Canaries. The reaction of students, parents and teachers is, at present, a mystery, and regional education minister has already ruled: "We must tackle it imposed on us by the State and therefore Citizenship Education is taught in the course 2008/09. "
The curriculum, established by decree, has been added to Canary issues such as immigration, multiculturalism, the relationship and communication with the outside or the rational use of new technologies. According to the director general for Planning and Educational Innovation, Guillermo Melian, "have been divided in the case of three thematic Primary and Secondary in five.
The same decree establishes the autonomy of schools, which also affects other controversial aspects of Education for Citizenship: teaching materials and textbooks that are used to impart. In this regard, the Administration has shown sharp to ensure that "schools are the ones to decide, subject to compliance with the curriculum." Still, given the controversial issues in the school community following a complaint by the PSC, no center is expected to include a manual published in which, apparently, was left to the archipelago in more than a bad place.
All these events have been shuffled and analysis since the adoption of Act, but until recently there was still a mystery in the air, since neither the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Ministry of Education had officially pronounced as the professional profile of teachers to be teaching the subject. In this regard, recently the State has established that the qualifications required for teachers of citizenship is the same as currently required for teachers in the areas of Geography and History and Social Sciences (Philosophy, Sociology, Law or Political Science among others).
